I would say the best recruiting classes we got was under Mora. The guy was a hell of a recruiter, terrible coach and didn’t develop enough talent. His top 10 recruiting classes constantly lost to Stanford and their ‘average’ players. SC has the same problem, top 5 recruiting classes every year but haven’t been able to compete even for a conference title.
Football is won at the line and in watching the elite teams play in the playoffs, a few things are constant 1) no penalties, especially dumb penalties, 2) physical and violent 3) clear communication and understanding responsibilities. All 3 are mental and should be taught through coaching and that’s what we hope Chesney can implement.
Competing for 4 and 5* recruits or portal guys are a lost cause for UCLA. We don’t have the money nor the brand to attract those guys. Therefore to continue to try to outspend SEC, Oregon or Texas is impossible.
