In my opinion the 1980 UCLA-USC game is one of the greatest Bruin games I ever attended. Indeed it’s probably the game that I rewatched the most over the years. This was Freeman McNeil’s incredible game winning TD catch, but it was more than that. It was Coach Donahue’s first win over USC, which may have saved his job after four straight losses to USC, avenging a 35 point loss the year before. Things looked bleak as with a 3 point lead with 6 minutes to go, SC ran back a Jay Schroeder pick to the UCLA 10, putting them on the brink of victory. Miraculously SC didn’t score and UCLA came back for the win. For some reason this great win has faded away from prominence in recent years. Anyway I found my old VHS tape and digitized the second half, and hid it on my vacation video page where hopefully the video police won’t find it.
