Everything I've seen/read about him since he took the job has been very impressive.
However, a few days ago I watched a rerun of JMU's early-2025 game against Louisville, a game in which the Dukes came from ahead to lose. The excellent Andre Ware was the color announcer, and even though he praised Chesney quite a lot, he expressed himself amazed that Chesney was constantly alternating between two QBs, not just at starts of possessions, but mid-possession, the whole game long. One QB (the one who later in the season became the clear QB1) was a capable passer but no running threat, the other QB (Matthew Sluka) ran the ball, himself, 21 times while only trying to pass 5 times. As Ware pointed out, this In-N-Out approach makes it very difficult for a passing game to get into any kind of rhythm. Also, by the 2nd half Louisville's D had to know that if Sluka was QB, he'd probably run.
If anybody can suggest a defense for that strategy by Chesney, I'd love to hear it.
