There was a Sun Belt podcaster who spoke on this as a guest on the UCLA Locked On podcast, if you want to hear it.
The QB1, Barnett, sustained a serious knee injury at the very end of the 2024 season, and was still not close to 100% early in the 2025 season. I believe this guest said he was more like 70%.
Barnett is a dual threat QB, but was limited as a runner at the time. It sounded like maybe he didn’t have confidence in his knee yet. The backup, Sluka, was used almost exclusively as a runner. As the season progressed and Barnett got comfortable again, Sluka played less and less.
