Guerrero had many flaws as AD, some of which he inherited, but one thing he did well was handle the budgetary side of things, especially with at best disinterested campus leadership (yes, performance suffered, especially as we have been perpetually behind in the College Athletics spending arms race ever since we stopped getting preferential treatment in the CFA TV contracts). One need only look at Cal's mismanagement over that same period and how many programs they were cutting during every downturn, and the fact that they regularly receive over $25m in support from main campus for athletics.
Hell, when we hired Jarmond, things actually were getting where they needed to be - hiring Chip Kelly didn't turn out, but it was the right move to finally land a big name, high dollar coach, the Wasserman Center had been built, the UnderArmor contract was signed, Cronin had just been hired and did well enough to reach a final 4, etc.
But, Covid and UnderArmor pulling out definitely ended that momentum, as well as Kelly , but an utter disaster at managing the program through CFB changes (tho a being a pretty good coach), and Cronin on a long, slow fade.
Hopefully Harris can right the ship and we can get an organization which is ready for the challenges of the next few years - we absolutely need to be doing much better by the time the current Big Ten TV contract is up at the end of the 2030 season - if we don't look like a top program which is regularly ranked, we could easily be on the outside looking in, rather like Cal and Stanford in the ACC now.
