Before that, the industry was vertically integrated, with Studios handling production, distribution and exhibition (theaters) with exclusivity as a feature.

The Studio system thrived when they could control distribution and decide theaters should show their films. Studios effectively controlled what theaters showed so kept a stable of actors and below the line talent to keep churning out movies for their theaters to screen.

Independent productions, studios and theaters changed all that.
