It's my understanding that Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds were among the last under studio contract. And that Universal released them both on the same day.

Soon, the big stars started selling their services through their own corporations. Eastwood was Malpaso, McQueen was Solar, Redford was Wildwood, etc. I suspect that shifted their salaries from wages to capital gains.

They might home themselves at a particular studio (Eastwood's been in the same bungalow at Warner's for 50 years) but they are not exclusive.
