They only got 8, the exact minimum number they needed. Of the eight two were retiring and none of them are up for reelection.
This is what they were doing this weekend when the dems were meeting to craft a deal. Not working on ACA subsidies but who were the 8 that they can get to cave. Interestingly it is possible that some of the 8 didn't want to cave but they wanted to save some of the senators that were up for re election. In a perverted sense they might feel they are patriots to the party.
Thus the troubling thing that nobody seems to be talking about is that there were likely more than 8 that were willing to fold, but Shummer put out the 8 that were least likely to suffer in the near term.
And the sad thing is despite being up close to the whole fold of democracy, too many elected democratic officials think they can negotiate with the enablers of autocracy who follow a dictator.
