I was referring to whether there's an authoritative body in the US that defines what the official name of geographical features are. I mean, is there a body that can decide tomorrow morning that henceforth, the Sahara desert will be known as the Tunisian desert and so official documentation, the media, school book references will all need to be readjusted? I thought these were all handled by convention, and a bit of "you call it whatever people know it as" such that it's actually still you can still the Gulf of Mexico regardless of what the White House wants you to call it.

Sure, the same body of water may have different names. That happens all the time across languages and societies.
