I became even more convinced if it in the era of ICE asking poele where the were born. Before that it was proof of citizenship in employment. Also proof of identity in voting. All requirements that are reasonable in principle but with no standardized form of ID to serve the purpose.
And then there is the whole SSN thing. A number created for something very specific being repurposed as a national ID number of sorts, minus the kind of security needed for that kind of usage.
I completely understand the reluctance. I personally grew up with a national ID card/number so I don't have that emotional resistance. At no moment in my life did I think though that the lack of democracy where I grew up either stemmed from or facilitated by having a national ID card. But for folks who never had one, I can see how it could have bad associations.
