but it was not just some fancy skull and bones. It was the SS skull and bones (= Totenkopf). There is no ambiguity about what it was.
He got the tattoo in Croatia. So chances are very good that the artist knew exactly what it was. He got it with some fellow soldiers, so there is also a good chance some of those folks knew what it was.
Did he know? Maybe. Maybe not.
What matters is not what he knew about the tattoo he was getting at the time, but where he is now. Is he gaslighting us? Maybe. Maybe not. We can't be sure unless we keep an eye on him in the future.
The right is perfectly fine with Hegseth's tattoos. They can shut the eff up.
