One advantage Mamdani has is that he will never be a threat to other Democrats with national ambitions. He wasn't born in the United States and cannot be President or Vice President. He is very talented but also confined regionally.
He just has to be good at NY politics and good at governance and he's shown to be both thus far. He can't go beyond the governorship or the Senate, or could find a safe House seat if he tires of being mayor. If anything there is incentive for national Dems to leave him alone -- because he is no threat, and will only occupy offices which other individuals could occupy and use as a springboard for national office. Also within Democratic politics, he can be an important ally for other Democrats seeking larger office.
