Who was it that was arguing with me about it? I can't remember why it was such a contentious contention.
Things have progressed sooooooooo far from what I was thinking. My ideas were small potatoes, but I still think they would be effective. Russian soldiers will take predictable routes when trying to take a position. Why not pre-load those routes with explosives. Bigger than what a drone can carry. Use the drone as a spotter.
And, use the drones for psychological warfare. Even if you don't have an expensive armed drone, buzz the Russian troops, get in their heads that they are being watched. And, that maybe this drone will kill them. Make them never feel safe.
For that matter, I don't know why the Russians aren't flying drones around Ukrainian cities. Just to ramp up the fear.
I'm sure there are good reasons none of these are being done.
Since you got me going, I'm a little bit surprised things haven't advanced more. 15 or so years ago I watched some Science Channel (or something) thing on "The Future of Warfare" It was talking about autonomous military drones (I'm sure there's a better word). Saying that they will be networked, and will independently carry out missions. I'm surprised we haven't seen more of that, even if it was just defensive.
The Iranian "Jellyfish" may be an early iteration of that?
The tv show was saying that insects provide good models for how to structure the interactions between the drones.
Surely the technology is there to do that.
One thing that's interesting is that the US appears to be sooooo behind the curve. But, who knows what we actually have?
On that note, at the risk of raising your hackles, from what I've read, the Havanna Syndrome weapons seem to be real. The descriptions of when Maduro was plucked, have elements that seem to align with that kind of weapon.
But, ya, that seems like so long ago. Hard to believe that war is still so far from resolution. It's kind of like Viet Nam in reverse. Or any of the wars where a big country is fighting a little country that is supplied by a big country benefactor.
