vote for a Democrat (which is to nominate someone who's ideologically and demographically indistinguishable from a Republican candidate), they would still come up with a reason not to vote for a Democrat. End of story.
If nothing else, they would look at that Democratic candidate and think, "Here is a Democrat who is virtually indistinguishable from a Republican. If that's the case how do I know that this Democrat really believes what he says and will not switch and bait on me down the line? And why should I not go ahead and vote for a Republican anyway, if they're the same?"
This is an impossible game to win and Democrats keep falling into this trap all the time, the net effect of which is Democrats moving farther and farther away from their core principles to the point that there are no core principles left, and once that happens, the only winner in elections no matter which party gains control is the top 0.1%. Big Money, IOW, That's trap that Democrats continue to fall into with great enthusiasm ws they jettison all the vulnerable groups by the way side along the way, sacrificing them to the predators of the right wing.
Obama was a minority. And yet he won. That's because he offered something different. He was the "change" candidate. Trump won because he was a "change" candidate. Biden won because he was a "change" candidate. Trump won again because relative to Harris, who did not distance herself from Biden, *he* was the change candidate.
The pattern here is not Democrats who don't look and sound like Republicans -- they are frankly a dime a dozen at this point. The pattern is "change".
Americans have been deeply disillusioned with the American narrative since god knows when (2008?) and they are willing to vote for anyone who looks like they'll shake things up.
