He had a hilarious sequence a few years ago against Arsenal who needed a win at Villa. Towards the end of the game, Jorginho smashed a shot that Martinez dove to block, but the shot came off the bar and onto the back of Emi’s head, and into the back of the net. It’s wasn’t an own goal, it was an own’d goal. Hilarious. 1-nil to the Arsenal!
To make it even better, on the next sequence he ran forward on a set play to the other end of the pitch to try be the hero ignoring his coach who was screaming at him to get back in goal. On the ensuing play, Leo Trossard flicks the ball to Gabriel Martinelli who is about a yard ahead of Emi, free on goal. Emi tries to catch up running as fast as he can but Martinelli is Brazilian and in the top 5% of forwards in terms of foot speed. Martinelli races a head and looks back and sees he has gained another few yards, looks back again and sees Emi laboring another few feet behind him. Martinelli slows down, puts his arms up, and rolls it slowly into the back of Emi’s goal, just out of reach.
Emi had been sh!t-talking all week (he used to play for Arsenal) and the whole sequence was magic
