It can install a smaller version of the code needed to task a computer with infecting other computers and have them all carry out tasks. Even if you shut down the orginal network, you haven't contained the problem. There is no "shut-down switch."

It might take a lot of computer power to develop the strategy, but a lot less to execute it.

Or to put it another way, it might take a ton of resources to develop the engine, but a lot fewer resources to run the engine.

The question remains, why would an AI want to do this? We don't really know. Would an AI decide this is the best way to carry out an innocuous task? Would some person with intent to do harm to others start the sequence of events?

So many things can go wrong.
