The reactions from people in Germany was astonishment that there could be such a cataclysmic change of leadership with so little disruption. Nixon out; Ford in. Business as usual.
In parliamentary system, this would be a collapse of government.
Some weeks before, I saw a paperback of the Nixon tape transcripts published by the NYT in a rack at the Dusseldorf train station. I bought it and read it. I was dubious that Nixon had done anything impeachable.
Then Nixon lost his case at the supreme court and the rest of the tapes were released. This was all covered extensively in the International Herald Tribune. Once I read those transcripts, I knew Nixon was done, and watched it play out. It was fascinating following all of this from overseas.
