Still early - heading into the top of the third
There's an extra umpire used in the conference tournament, stationed near second base. Bruin 2nd baseman Anna Vines turned to run to get a pop fly to short center and ran into the ump, shaking herself up, has had to come out of the game. (She was just shown sitting in the dugout watching so hopefully she's okay now - she was down awhile after the collision.)
Vines is the second starter not able to play in this game. Charlie Palacios, starting catcher, was hit seemingly in the arm by a bat in a game, seemed to be seriously hurt - looking like a likely broken bone in her arm - and has been out since. (She still made the Pas-12 all-defensive team I believe. Significant loss.
Scheduling strikes me as odd. This tournament is being played at Arizona. The top seed generally gets the bottom seed first round. But in this case, Oregon State - the only team in the conference with a losing record - made the field while Arizona was sent to the play in game against Arizona State.
Washington got to play Oregon State in the quarter finals and beat them 1-0.
Meanwhile UCLA plays the home team, Arizona. The 'Cats are a good-hitting team and Faraimo isn't off to the best of starts. With one out in the top of the third AZ already has five hits and two runs, has bases loaded. Bruins could get a good deal of rest before the Women's World Series and, if they lose the #2 seed, would wind up in Oklahoma's side of the bracket and be forced to face the Sooners before the finals.
