If making a Final Four is such a great achievement, then why doesn't Cronin's F4 impress you since you want him fired? Perhaps if he won the national championship that year you would be singing a different tune.
You downplay second chances, but that is exactly what happened with Skyy Clark whose prior relationship with Cronin was key in getting him. Cronin also recruited Jaime Jacquez at Cincinnati and when Alford was fired, JJJ could have gone elsewhere, but he already knew Cronin. With so many players transferring these days, coming close is extremely important.
Losing a recruiting battle but winning the war is also possible. Not getting one player might open a spot for someone who turns out as good or better. Example: UCLA offered center Vince Iwuchukwu in July of 2021. They offered Adem Bona soon after. Iwuchukwu committed to USC in September. That kept a spot open for Bona who committed in November. Iwuchukwu was a bust, now at his third school. Bona was outstanding.
