It seems to me that both approaches have their advantages, and it really depends on the makeup of your team. I’d argue that lining up under center is tough with the center we currently have. Credit to him because he’s been working incredibly hard for two years, but when you compare their defensive line to our offensive line, there’s really no contest. My guess is the coaches knew they weren’t going to win that battle.
I also feel like if they had tried to power through or even run a quarterback sneak there, a lot of people would have questioned why they went that route, knowing they have the inferior line, which quite frankly has been rough for two years now.
If they were planning to bootleg out of that formation, I could see the logic. But trying to power run against that defense wasn’t realistic. It looked like the strategy was to keep the defense guessing between run and pass, then rely on everyone holding their blocks long enough to give our running back a one-on-one shot against a linebacker. It didn’t work this time, but I don’t blame the play call. It came down to execution. We actually won more of those coaching matchups than they did overall, and that’s a big part of why we came out on top. We had them guessing all day.
