Take Jerry Neuheisel, I'll consider him a very good coach right now. Is that more because he was a QB or is that more because he comes from a family that coached? I think it is more the latter.
I think catchers can be great as an extra coach because they are involved with every pitch and no one works harder than a catcher. I think it can help as a manager, but there are plenty of managers out there that are really good that never caught.
End of the day, think it comes down to the qualities of the individual. Who has natural leadership qualities? Who is very detail oriented? Who is constantly looking to learn, open to new ideas, and creative? And another thing that I think is really hard for many people is who is willing to do the right thing even if it means potentially costing yourself victories? A lot of athletes try to get away with not working hard, being late, etc. Most will look the other way and you can end up with a cancer.
I just thought a lot of the better coaches were the guys that typically were just OK as athletes. It's that if you can't do it, teach it thing.
