The best coaches are guys who have coached QB and/or OL (because you get a more macro view of offense) and were overachieving type players in their careers (and thus focused on getting everything out of what they have).
Could just be stereotypes, idk.
For me, I want a coach that's smart as a whip, ambitious, obsessive, super competitive, and a good salesman.
To me, Jerry comes off as an intelligent guy, much more so than Foster.
He's a lot more personable than Chip.
He's a good talker like Rick and Tino, but comes off as more sincere, less slick. More likeable.
It was said that after he got the OC job on Tuesday he slept very little and prepared pretty much the whole time up until game time. Could be an exaggeration but I wouldn't doubt it. I recall Jeff Tedford used to sleep in his office at Cal.
Foster was not any of these things, really. I can't see him obsessing or working tirelessly to win a game. He couldn't even prepare some comments for Big 10 Media Day last year. He never seemed to have anything interesting to say. And he just struggled to communicate or inspire the slightest bit of confidence.
On a related note, Tim Skipper was a huge overachiever as a player. I grew up in Fresno so I know that program well. He was also a coach's kid and a 5'7" linebacker who made all-conference and was team captain.
Both of these guys are head and shoulders above Foster. Honestly, hiring Foster was a disgrace, a move that was completely indefensible. For that alone Jarmond has to go, because if you really believed Foster could do the job (not hoped, but really believed) you don't have any business hiring a football coach.
