my theory is that up until pretty recently, it's had a strong working class vibe. A lot of tradesmen there. And, it's kind of a rough place. There's this weird "HB guys love to fight" thing.
So, my impression is that they get more people than your average white community that spend some time in jail. Between the old working class vibe and the rowdy vibe, some of those guys just end up doing some time. I've known a couple of guys that have done a month plus in county jail for DUI's. From what they say, in jail, you only associate with your own race (one of them was Asian). My guess is that people that go to jail for any length of time come out affected by that dynamic. And, in HB, they're going to be white.
Lakewood probably has, or had, a similar vibe. And, old school Long Beach seems similar. I don't know why Lakewood and Long Beach are not as demonstrably MAGA-Y as Huntington. Maybe because there aren't big white enclaves like there used to be.
Clearly, religion is playing a role in this. But, when I think Huntington, I don't think "religion." I think hard living, hard partying. Newport seems a wayyyy more religious community, but you don't see the MAGA wackyness in Newport that you do in Huntington. But, I'm old and probably very out of touch with current HB dynamics.
