IMO, it represents different things to different people and has a pseudo-scientific name, so that the idea (whatever is is) carries unwarranted gravitas. With apologies to Joan Didion, there is no there there. No defined meaning, no diagnosis of cause. It’s just a term used to belittle and dehumanize.

Speaking of pop psychology, I recently learned I exhibit a symptom of being a “performative male.” I’m doing a Joan Didion deep dive. Well, ans deep as I go, anyway. And I’d rather carry something around in a messenger bag than a backpack or briefcase.

That’s only 2 of the identifiers. Maybe I just have performative tendencies.
