I think their definition is not bad, but maybe badly worded

They say: Excessive risk-taking is another behavior often linked to toxic masculinity, whereby it reflects a belief that risk-taking is a way to demonstrate manliness and prowess within the social group.

I believe what they're trying to say is: Excessive risk-taking as a form of establishing social status and demonstrate manliness and prowess within the social group.

In that sense, I think it is an indicator because it excludes risktaking as a form of adventure or naive belief that you won't be harmed or a strategy to maximize returns. A young woman who always goes for the bad boy type is also taking an excessive risk but she's not doing it to establish social status. She's trying to maximize her return.

I think #17 (Excessive Competitiveness) and #18 (Inability to Admit Weakness) also iffy in this context. I know plenty of women who are excessively competitive and have very hard time admitting weakness.

Overall though, we all understand very well what kind of a man that label describes and we understand that in a lot cases these items more or less describe that kind of man damn near perfectly.

GOtta find out more about the performative male. I don't even do a messenger bag in my daily life. I practically carry one of those small shoulder bags which contains my glasses, shades, wallet, phone and music player. I can't fit all that sh*t into my pocket unless I'm wearing a parka or something. Added bonus: i know where my things are!
