Rollout?
In late 2021 the Biden admin announced a big ambitious plan to roll out fiber internet around the US to underserved communities many of whom had slow or no internet which was impacting jobs, schools and the ability of residents to work from home. Like all government programs it took longer than expected and Republicans turned it into a battleground constantly attacking it, too much money, lawsuit after lawsuit.
2024 was the year it started to happpen but then something happened, Trump won the election and everything stopped. And then Trump came into office and rewrote the entire plan. The lower limit on high speed internet had been set at 100mB, Elon had "won" an 885 million contract in 2020 but it was rescinded in 2022 when it became clear he'd lied about what Speeds Starlink could provide and when they couldn't prove they could hit the minimum, the contract was pulled. And then Trump changed all that and took back hundreds of millions of dollars planned for fiber rollout and gave it to.... Starlink. So now all those rural areas that were going to get gig fiber didn't, some of them got Starlink, much of them haven't even got that.
The Trump admin cut the funding and announced it as a big win, it was rolled into DOGE so it was one of the places where Elon "saved" money by awarding the contract to his own company via Trump.
Nobody is quite sure what Trump did with all that money he's probably using it for the ballroom and arch. Meanwhile schools in rural Louisian and Texas that were promised high speed internet either have Starlink or nothing.
