And during that period I expected to see the right-wing idiots fade away as a natural consequence of an ongoing gentrification process.
Boy, was I wrong.
I don't know how the MAGA people continue to hold sway in our local politics. Forget about the mayor who was not allowed to set foot in city hall... or the attempt to privatize the city library... or the proposal for a Trump statue... or the countless other weird events associated with the MAGA crowd. Here's something that affects all HB residents regardless of political preference: For a long time, local official defied state regulations regarding low-income housing. The city adopted a seriously-stupid position, claiming that as a charter city, HB is exempt from state housing mandates. The courts repeatedly ruled against the city. The city currently faces fines of roughly $160K for previous non-compliance with state regulations, and only adopted a plan in June of this year after facing additional fines of $50K per month. In most places, this type of leadership would get most politicians voted out of office, but not here....
How to understand what's happening?
In a generous mood, I assume the newcomers who moved into the city over the last few years are simply unaware and/or indifferent to what's happening. At other times I sadly conclude that the city continues to attract knuckleheads.
