with their fundamental psychological wiring. Where we see all of us sharing the burdens of people who are in need of help, they see an authority forcing them to care about someone else regarding a problem they convinced themselves they will never have to face.
If we ever get past this, we need to do some radical rethinking about how Americans regard one another and how a big portion of us simply reject the notion of living in a society where burdens are shared and we care for one another. We debate how much political restructuring would be needed (where some folks seem to assume all we need is a moral restructuring), but we don't talk about how much "cultural restructuring" (a shift in the starting principles) we need to have.
