You can take a decent/fairly good shooter, one who has decent "touch", and through various drills with thousands of reps, make him into a great shooter. But it is near impossible to take a poor shooter, one who has poor touch to start with, and make him into a great shooter.

That's particularly true with free throw shooting. Free throw shooting should be one of the easiest shots in the game. But for many players, it isn't because they lack good touch and lack the ability to completely focus on the task at hand---and without worrying about missing. Positive visualization is a big key.

And as far as drills go, there are many and most are effective if done properly. But it takes discipline, attention to detail and many, many reps. Even better with someone who knows the fundamentals watching and making sure you are not just practicing bad habits in performing the reps. That's been my experience.
