The teams at the top have gotten much better and the gap has never been wider
Got tired of watching Purdue kill McNeese State and looked at the women's second round games on now. UConn (picket by The Athletic's computers as most likely to win the tournament) is playing - well, no one really although Arkansas State does have a team on the floor. With 2 minutes to go in Q2, it's UConn 61, Ark St 11.
On pace to erase South Carolina's and others' romps yesterday.
That's what worries me about our team's chances. We have the personnel and we have Lauren Betts and Kiki Rice and Gabi Jaquez, but we are also prone to turnovers and lulls. Typically, we got off to a huge start last night - beat Southern to death in Qs 1 and again in Qs 3 and 4, but we eased up in Q2 we had a bunch of turnovers and wound up tied for the quarter at 15-15. We have committed more than 20 turnovers in multiple games.
These other top teams - at least to this point - get off to a fast start and keep their foot on the gas and bury their opponents. We don't. It will be the end of our tournament if we do that against a quality opponent. To win the tournament we have to win 6 out of six each game against a better opponent. And so far this season, we don't figure to be able to do that against the quality that will await everyone in the final three rounds.
UConn-Arkansas State? It's 66-16 at the half.
