There are two sources of payments to the players: Revenue sharing paid directly by the university and NIL funded by private contributions and corporations. There is a cap on the former, about $21 million for all sports. So it's all profit after that for the school from funds generated by star players (ticket sales, advertising, tournament revenue, etc.).
The problem is the ultra rich benefactors of some schools. The best examples were the top two highest paid college basketball players last season, AJ Dybantsa of BYU and JT Toppin of Texas Tech. Both had excellent seasons but their teams won a total of one NCAA tournament game. So as for recruiting advantages it's like MLB. Spending a lot of money doesn't guarantee success. Compare the Dodgers to the Mets. You have to spend it wisely.
