I didn't show up only when it was an "important" opponent or an important game. I didn't do my best only when I was on a winning team. Every season, every game, every play, every moment I did my best. Fans often use the word "we" when referencing the team they root for. But, it seems like it's only "we" when it's convenient or when the team wins or when they feel like it. Why is that?
If fans are going to claim some sort of ownership then they need to do their job which is support the team every moment not just when it suits them or when "their" team wins or wins enough or when it's too much trouble. I see fans high five-ing each other in the stands as if they've just accomplished something. Well, if they feel that way then have the gumption and frankly the balls to show up when things aren't absolutely rosy or warm or dry or close to home or against someone they deem a "worthy" adversary or all the other lame-ass excuses they throw out there for not showing up.
Sometimes fans just drive me up the wall. They want, want, want, and want and hardly ever think of giving. They want to think of themselves as part of the team, but don't want to do their part. They demand good coaches but don't want to acknowledge that a strong fan base makes it easier for a university to get a good coach. They want good recruits but they don't want to take the responsibility that a strong fan base makes it easier to recruit those guys or easier to raise money. They just want to high five each other in the stands without doing their part to earn the right to feel like they are part of the team.
