you can grade or compare to anything in the past. You have legit arguments that Ucla messed up with Chip Kelly contracts. Personally, I think what Kelly did at this time is beyond f'ed up. Maybe the worst thing I've seen a HC do.
I just don't see how there were many legitimate options if any on the table for a HC at this stage. If Ucla had a big recruiting class coming in, a big group in the transfer portal, or an existing roster that looked strong, then I could possibly see a name person seriously considering the job. I think it is more realistic that if they went outside of anybody on the current staff, the question would be how many guys are hitting the transfer portal?
Even if a guy like Tony White was a serious consideration, I would have to believe he and his agent and anyone close to him would realize he'd be going into a really bad situation right now. If he is as good as people are saying, a HC position doesn't sound like it would be far off so I think his options are wait a year for a better situation where you can get your staff and move forward or really look for a substantial amount of money if you want to come into Ucla's situation if you want to take that risk.
I'm just not that surprised at the Foster hire. It just comes across as who would give you the best chance to retain who you have on roster, who could utilize the current staff, and who would get the most out of the current roster? Unless some miracle happened, I'm not surprised about Foster. All I can do now is hope for the best and maybe we lucked out and got a diamond in the rough.
At least for the next year, I'm just want to see Ucla be competitive in their games.
