The market has gotten to where pretty soon even middling QBs are going to command prohibitively expensive contracts.

The Niners haven't even started talking to Purdy about a contract extension, yet the looming expectation that it will obliterate the QB market at somewhere between $60-65 million per season is already affecting every single move they make this season, and next year it is going to force them to blowup their roster. And once that happens, every subsequent deal is going to aim to top it. It's not going to be long before bottom tier QBS are making $30 million and any upper tier QB is going to be able to command enough money to ensure that his team can't afford to fill out the roster with enough talent to capitalize on what he's being paid.

In the last collective bargaining agreement the owners should have argued for a provision to put a ceiling on the maximum percentage that any one player can count against a team's overall salary cap.
