You are suffering from the delusion that the purpose of the playoff is to pick the best team. It never was. It never will be.
Of course, the purposes are to make money and entertain fans. A single-elimination tournament is not the way to pick the best team, but in basketball it generates most of the NCAA's income and fan interest is off the charts.
Some fans complain about the format. They always will. It probably needs some changes. But I will be watching and I expect to be entertained.
BTW, Ohio State is the #8 seed, and lots of people think they are the best team in college football. They would not be in a 4-team playoff. Would an 8-team playoff been better? Perhaps. But this is the format we have. I plan to enjoy the games.
