You are clearly a casual. Ohio state was actually the 6th ranked team, not the 8th. They got slotted in the 8 hole because of a stupid methodology that I’m sure will be revised next year. Additionally, I didn’t see the poll you reference that many people think OSU is the best team. You can find “many people who believe almost anything. What was true at the beginning of the season is that Ohio State was perceived as the most talented team. Unfortunately for them they suffered a couple of very consequential injuries to the left side of their OL and their weakest link is the most importsnt position on the field.
Contrary to your arbitrary assertion, college football DID attempt to pick the best team each year. It was called the BCS. There were the polls and the computers and they picked the two best teams to play for all the marbles. In addition to determining the best team, everyone could make a lot of $$ with the bowls. It was the best of all worlds. A real champ and lots of $$. Maybe you were not paying attention. Even the prior system with 4 teams did a better job than the current monstrosity where we award admission to non-deserving team a la SMU, Clemson, ASU and Boise because they won bad conferences or in SMU’s case, I have no idea why.
The basketball tourney is irrelevant — it’s a construct for a sport that people no longer care about to generate interest. Nobody watches the regular season in college hoop. College football doesn’t have that issue. It’s the second most watched sport in the country. College football doesn’t need to resort to a gimmick. The addition of these games while interesting to the fans is objectively bad for the players. The number of additional injuries and wear and tear on the body is not a good thing.
Bring back the BCS. Even if, occasionally, the two best teams aren’t obvious (which is rare if you look through history) the debate is part of the charm of college football. Of course, the real conclusion, based on your post, is an NFL-lite premier league. I’m all for that. Get rid of these ridiculous imbalanced conference schedules that make it too difficult to discern wheat from chaff and who has a fantastic record because they didn’t draw the powers in their respective conferences a la Indiana and Texas.
