He needs to hire good assistants.
The head coach needs to fund-raise and be a good manager. He should be a good closer in recruiting. He needs to handle motivation. He doesn't need to be very hands-on with the players.
In fact, I would argue that a head coach who is too involved in the details is doing it wrong. A manager of any operation who tries to micro-manage generally does a bad job.
Not that this is new. Bear Bryant used to sit up on a platform 20 feet above the practice.
Does a head coach need to be heavily involved in in-game decisions, like whether to punt or go for it? I suspect there are sucessful head coaches who are heavily involved, and successful head coaches who are not.
