After a “gone viral” dreadful faceplant in his debut B10 media day a year ago, Foster had nowhere to go than up. Had one year to drill, rehearse and polish his Media Day presentation, which by the way, is perhaps the least challenging task for a major head football coach, a rote exercise where ease and raconteurial skills pour like cheap wine.
Except for DeShuan Foster. He stepped up to the dais glued to a piece of paper reading a good deal of his “candid” opening remarks like a high school book report.. Nothing much initially off the top of his head except for profuse sweating, a sense of ill at ease which is uncomfortable to behold. Just about any competent major head coach has their spiel down cold, second nature burnished (unfortunately see Lincoln Kennedy ugh).. Not Foster. Yeah he had some of his snooze go to cliche phrases, “excited,” “special,” his DRE pillars, some self-effacing comments on “last time he was up there” (ok) and plenty more perspiration to be wiped off with a table cloth sized hanky. He even had the benefit of what appeared to be cringeworthy planted question from SI’s Hondo Carpenter ..fluffing Jarmond as
“One of the most respected young ADs in America who
“picked” you as his head football coach” ….yeah right.
All this will be forgotten if UCLA has a winning season…somehow..
But for now ….
DRE still means digital rectal exam ….
