Ucla would not have had to pay a buyout. His contract would have terminated right then.
That's why people are pissed about how he handled the whole situation. Kelly signed an extension less than a year before he left. If Kelly wanted to leave, fine, but why should Ucla have to be on the hook for a buyout then? This isn't the same as the ordinary world where you can fire someone with little consequence. That's why I don't like the term 'fired' in these cases. They aren't fired.
Ucla was about to start their first season in the B10 and had a road game at LSU and Kelly had done nothing to get the assistant coaches lined up, replace players that were transferrring, and had Ucla over a barrel. Kelly handled this situation in a manner in which he didn't have to pay a dime. If the Ohio St job didn't come around, Kelly looked like he would have done the bare minimum, at best, to make sure Ucla had to end the contract and pay a huge buyout.
