After losing our (rental) home in Ojai in the 2017 Thomas Fire, we moved down to a trailer on a nice property in Point Dume, which we then lost in 2018 to the Woolsey Fire.

The owner who lived in the main house, along with three or four neighbors, stayed back. No running water. They fought it with water from the spa, and a water truck came by and filled up their trash cans. They saved at least five homes, with over 60 destroyed within 1/2 a mile.

They just focused on hot spots around the houses, got lucky with no embers into attic vents, and I guess no big decks with debris underneath.

We now live in Sonoma County, building a home in the redwoods. It's all WUI (wildland urban interface) - concrete siding, asphalt roof, tempered windows, indoor sprinkler system, no crawl space vents, no vegetation with 10 feet of the house. Crossing our fingers!
