Carmax's prices are higher than other used car dealers and they don't negotiate. They rely on low credit buyers that don't have any other options. Sure, it's convenient to just go in, see a lot of alternatives and plunk down the money they ask for, but you pay for that, a lot.
Find a friend that knows something about cars and buy one from a private party that's taken care of it. More work but worth it.
