Yes, he needs independents, but before he can win them over, he needs a base for money and infrastructure.

The MAGA base provides that, just as it did for Trump in 2024 despite being as unpopular as he is now after leaving office in 2020.

As much as Democrats want to boast about being favored to win the presidency in 2028, the GOP will likely take it back within 4 to 8 years, with the same independents changing sides.

Young voters put Biden in office, but they had no problem switching and putting Trump back in office, despite disliking him four years earlier.
