I will go with others who say the reason the SC ruled the way they did on immunity is they were trying to influence the 2024 election. They knew that ruling would make a HUGE impact on all of Trumps cases, even the Georgia case that shouldn't have been impacted since it wasn't a federal case.
They did 2 things, signal to America he's NOT going to be in prison in Nov when the election is held on Jan 6 charges. And Thomas literally spelled out for Aileen Cannon that she should throw out the documents case claiming Smith wasn't legally appointed. They knew Trumps' legal issues were a big problem in the election, but free of those he was the best chance the GOP had to win because of his base. So they gave him immunity
