It looks like the only American gameplan was kill their leader, bomb the crap out of them and hope the Iranian people would rise up and topple the government.

Well, that hasn't happened so far. They elevated the son, they fought back, they're trying to turn it into a regional conflict, and they're trying to F with the worldwide oil supply. Our response....."crickets". No one thought that far ahead.
