If he succeeds, he becomes the guy that saved the country. If he fails, he should resign from the cabinet before Trump can fire him... and then he will separate himself from the sinking ship called the Trump Administration. Either way, he will be well-positioned to become the next GOP nominee.

Of course, there's also the chance that he gets murdered - literally killed dead - by some die-hard MAGA guy(s) sometime before 2028.
