This weird belief most Americans are indoctrinated in that says "if you put your mind to it and work hard at it, you can do anything", as if the WC championship is just a matter of wanting it hard enough and not achieving the championship simply is a shortcoming of the will.
I know this is not a conscious thought that the fans entertain but it is built into the way most people think because it defines the template that most people operate on.
I think that's also what broke down the American tradition of collective action and the desire to make things better for everyone over the decades, but that's probably another thread.
