OpenAI was created, in part, around the goal of developing safe AI.
Then people left OpenAI to create Anthropic and Claude, another company explicitly focused on building safe AI.
Meanwhile, the CEOs and board members of these companies repeatedly warn that their own products could potentially destroy the world—and their safety evaluations and public profiles go through the roof.
If they didn't believe these claims were in their own interests, they wouldn't keep making them.
Tobacco companies don't market cigarettes by warning customers that their products will give them cancer. But these AI companies are essentially saying, "Our technology could be extraordinarily dangerous," while simultaneously benefiting from the attention, investment, prestige, and regulatory influence that comes with being perceived as the company capable of controlling that danger.
Doomsday marketing is nothing new. Gold dealers have been using essentially the same strategy for decades: convince people that economic collapse, inflation, or some other catastrophe is coming, and then sell them the solution.
