When the AI breaks out it extends its tentacle into some server out there somewhere like a hacker would.
If you can detect that an AI has broken into your server and it's having its way, you can certainly contain the damage by disconnecting it from the network, but they you would probably have to do some massive scrubbing. Likely strip out every piece of software and then do a fairly deep wiping before you can use it again because you wouldn't know what kind of command was embedded in what corner of the disk.
I suppose they can replicate themselves in any data center they gained control of.
