was all city with a 27 ppg average.

A while ago I was at a family gathering (mostly a distant in- law family gathering) and met a women who had been a starting guard at Yale (until recently the apg record holder) and her father an ex high school football coach.

We had a long interesting discussion about sports and basketball in particular. The ex- Yale player mentioned how she marveled at how fans can dis players never realizing just how good these players are - even the guys who sit the bench and don't get in to games much. Those guys can go into almost any gym in the country and just kick butt.

When I got out of the service Walton was just emerging out of his freshman year. I had been completely out of touch for years and didn't know much about him. On that team was the point guard Greg Lee. Greg was a good competent role player with some skills I thought. I had no idea he was 2 time city player of the year in high school. Another example is Don Saffer who averaged 26 ppg in high school. It's sometimes important to remember just how good these guys really are. I thought I was a pretty good basketball player and never came anywhere near where some of these guys were and are. It's scary to realize just how much talent is needed to even get on to a college bench let alone on to the floor.
