Your criteria for greatness being that he didn't get drafted by the NBA is faulty considering that many great college players fail to make it in the league (e.g. Ed O) and that Cotton declared for the draft after only one season in Division I after bouncing around several programs at several levels without getting a chance to develop his game. Assuming Lavin couldn't help him do that is just baseless speculation as many of his players were successful in the NBA.
